The History Of Screen Printing In London
The history of screen printing in London can be traced back to the 18th century. In the early days, screen printing was used primarily for printing textiles. In the 19th century, screen printing began to be used for printing posters and other printed materials.
The first screen printing shop in London was opened in the early 1900s. The shop was owned by a man named William Morris, who was a well-known artist and designer. Morris used screen printing to create a variety of products, including t-shirts, posters, and banners.
In the 1960s, screen printing became popular with the counterculture movement. Screen printers created a variety of clothing and accessories with psychedelic designs. This helped to popularize screen printing and make it more accessible to the general public.
In the 1980s, screen printing became popular with the punk rock movement. Screen printers created a variety of clothing and accessories with punk rock designs. This helped to further popularize screen printing and make it even more accessible to the general public.
Today, screen printing is a popular choice for businesses and individuals who want to create custom printed products. There are many screen-printing shops in London that offer a variety of services, including screen printing, embroidery, and vinyl printing.
What Is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is a traditional method of printing that uses a screen to transfer ink onto a t-shirt. The screen is made of a mesh material that is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. The design is then exposed to light, which hardens the emulsion in the areas where the ink will be applied. The unhardened emulsion is then washed away, leaving a stencil behind. The ink is then applied to the screen and squeegeed onto the t-shirt.
Screen printing has been used for centuries, but it became widely popular in the 20th century with the rise of the counterculture movement. Screen printing was used to create posters, t-shirts, and other items that were used to promote political and social causes.
Benefits Of Screen Printing
There are many benefits to using screen printing. Some of the benefits include:
Versatility: Screen printing can be used to create a wide variety of products,
including t-shirts, posters, banners, and more.
Customisation: Screen printing can be used to create custom printed products.
This means that you can create products that are unique to your business or brand.
Durability: Screen printed products are durable and can withstand wear and tear.
This makes them a good choice for businesses that need to create products that will last.
Cost-effectiveness: Screen printing is a cost-effective printing technique, particularly on high volume.
This makes it a good choice for businesses that need to create high-quality printed products without breaking the bank.
Today, screen printing is just one of the ways to print onto garments. Technology has come on in leaps and bounds and we are able to offer alternatives depending on budget and quantity of clothing.
Other Forms Of T Shirt Printing
Direct-to-garment (DTG)
This form of printing is a newer method of printing that uses a digital printer to apply ink directly to a t-shirt (similar to how a desktop inkjet printer works but by industrial built machines).
This method is more versatile than screen printing, as it can be used to print multi-colour, multi-shaded complex designs and images with a much-reduced set-up cost. However, DTG printing is also more expensive than screen printing on a per unit basis.
Direct-to-film (DTF)
This is the very latest technology and is a hybrid of DTG printing and the old-fashioned transfer print form of printing. The transfers are produced in printers very similar to the DTG set-up, so you can still produce highly technical and complex designs.
The difference is the transfers are then heat-pressed onto the garment using high temperature, high pressure heat presses. The transfers are very soft and long-lasting. This form of printing can work out better value than DTG depending on the size of the prints.
How to Choose a T-Shirt Printing Business
When choosing a t-shirt printing business, it is important to consider the following factors:
Price: T-shirt printing can be a relatively expensive process,
so it is important to get quotes from multiple businesses before making a decision.
Quality: The quality of the printing will depend on the experience and skill of the screen printer.
Be sure to ask to see samples of the business’s work before making a decision.
Turnaround time: If you need your prints done quickly,
be sure to choose a business that has a short turnaround time.
Customer service: It is important to choose a business that has good customer service.
If you have any questions or problems, you want to be able to get in touch with someone who can help you.
Reviews: See what others have thought of the service and value the business claims to offer.
In that regard we are very proud of our reviews.
Additional T Shirt Printing Tips
Here are some additional tips for getting your t-shirts printed:
When designing your t-shirt, keep in mind the size of the print area. Most businesses have a maximum size for prints,
so be sure to check with the business before you start designing.
If you are using a complex design, be sure to use a high-quality image file.
This will help ensure that the print comes out looking sharp. We ask for vector artwork .eps or .ai files.
If you are ordering a large number of t-shirts, be sure to get a written quote from the business in advance.
This will help you avoid any surprises when it comes time to pay for the order.
